Open guard

Pretty much worked on open guard sweeps all month.  Today it was the spider guard, which I have very little experience with.    It seems the instructor will work on 10-12 techniques for the week and overlap them as he goes, so those that miss a few classes can pretty much catch up on everything,  which I highly appreciate.  First time I was able to go to two classes in the same week since I joined the new school.   Really liking the vibe and the insructors.  Its part of the Alliance team also, which I’ve had alot of respect for in the past.

Update – Im sore.

Many of the people at my new school, I’ve met before on the mats.  No real close friends due to my schedule, but my name was known to a few.  I had let my beard grow out since then, and a few of them kept giving me looks like they couldn’t place me from somewhere.  During our third class together,  Inky was rolling with one of the other females in the class and in between rolls,  said girl introduces herself and asks my name and how we knew each other.   Being an individual and slightly cracked, Inky replies that we are “Fuck buddies” .  She tells me this several days later.  I have yet to figure out how far that got passed around.  hehe

Goal setting and something to focus on

Several months ago, I checked out Michelle Nicolini and her shin on shin guard and found it interesting.  BJJ Scout was doing a study on it and it was interesting that it worked for both gi and no gi.  My instructor taught a pass out of it as we were studying sit sweep at the time.  I liked the sweep and have been playing with it and the guard in general during mat rolls.  Inky really didn’t like no-gi, so we might not be doing that class anytime soon, which is generally wed. nights.

First no-gi class in a year.

Holy guillotine man.  I felt like a newbie getting caught in an armbar 100 times in a roll.  I definitely need to work on my guillotine defense, and will certainly check out youtube and my instructor when I get a chance.   We might be doing only one class a week for a bit, which sucks, but I might be able to get in more work elsewhere. We will see.   On a good note, the body and especially the neck seems to be handling things for now.  I was kinda worried even if I didn’t want to be.   Inky definitely doesn’t like no-gi, but she was having a rough night.  Desperately love her by the way.  She might not even get on here, but I love that she is showing an interest in grappling again.   Sorta like getting as many of my loves in the same room at the same time.

Introduction

Fathead here,  I was going to do a not so brief introduction of my martial arts background, but it is a convoluted story , filled with non essential shit and stories that wrap around themselves.  Basically when I got out of the navy, I decided to take up martial arts of some sort.  In the last 12 years, I’ve taken TKD, shotokan karate, bjj, and judo.  I’ve been around the block and have a good idea of what I like to do, and what works for me.  If i could take both judo and bjj at the same time, I would, but I can’t.  I’m now at my 5th bjj school in the last 10 years and its an alliance affiliate. Both my wife and I like the atmosphere and the instructors they have there. In our heads and when we are talking to each other, we still call what we do as judo, cause that’s where we met and it rolls off the tongue better perhaps.  I have a very top heavy bjj game, emphasizing position over submission.  I have a poor guard, which is probably surprising to some since i’m a blue belt.   I do have a passing half guard, which I’m working on, and I’m working on my submissions and just getting back into the game.  Both of us are.
